Behrampore: A fire in the BSNL district headquarters at Behrampore in Murshidabad has affected the PSU’s mobile and landline telephone services.
The fire broke out past Tuesday midnight in the switch room for landlines in the multi-storied building. A staff on night-duty first spotted the fire and raised an alarm.
Together with security guards and colleagues, he tried dousing the flames using in-house fire extinguishers. But with the effort failing, the fire bridge was called in around 1 am.
Two fire-tenders fought it for about six hours and managed to contain the fire at morning. But due to the spraying of water on the machinery, the entire telephone operations of the office got paralysed.
“Soon on noticing the fire, the power supply was severed to the entire office by our staff. Now, since the machines are wet, we cannot switch on power and have no option but to wait for the machines to dry up. It may take several days,” a senior staff said.
Although the switch room for mobile services remained unaffected by the fire, due to the power shut down, it too cannot be activated. As a result, both the landline and mobile services of BSNL in Murshidabad have been badly hit.
The fire services department said that they were investigating to assert the cause of the fire. Although it suspected that short-circuit in the air-conditioner may have triggered the fire.
