Uttar Pradesh Industry Minister Satish Mahana met chairman emeritus of Tata group, Ratan Tata, in Mumbai on Wednesday in connection with the proposed investment by the industry major in Defence Industrial Corridor project of UP. 

The Defence Industrial Corridor project, envisaging an investment of Rs 20,000 crore, was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the UP Investors’ Summit in Lucknow in February this year and has the potential to attract investments of Rs 50,000 crore.

During the meeting, Mahana discussed various aspects and strategies for facilitating industries, bringing new investments and creating employment opportunities in UP. 

Ratan Tata expressed his interest in defence and aerospace sector, including manufacturing of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and defence components in Uttar Pradesh. 

While inviting the Tata group for the upcoming Defence Consultation at Aligarh, the minister said that the intent of the UP government was clear about transforming the state into the most attractive investment destination in the country. 

Mahana also highlighted other investment opportunities for the Tata group in the state such as housing sector, development of mini-airports and providing aviation services under RCS scheme of the government.

The Industry Minister also met Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani and thanked him for the successful grounding of Rs 10,000-crore investment of Reliance Jio Infocom to expand optical fibre network in Uttar Pradesh in July 2018. 

Ambani also congratulated Mahana and the UP government for the grand success of UP Investors’ Summit-2018 and the groundbreaking ceremony. 

The state government has announced UP Defence, Aerospace Unit Employment Promotion Policy in July after obtaining approval from the Cabinet, paving way for the construction of a Defence Industrial Corridor.

For the defence corridor, almost 3,000 hectare land has been identified in Bundelkhand by UP Expressways Industrial Development Authority, and acquisition is proposed. The corridor will pass through six districts — Aligarh, Agra, Jhansi, Kanpur, Lucknow and Chitrakoot.

The proposed UP Defence Industrial Corridor will play a key role in the state’s development by bringing in jobs and investments. Small and medium industries will specially benefit from the defence corridor and prove to be a game changer for the state.
