Based on a tip, officials searched the city railway junction on Wednesday and found 35 gunny bags of ration rice on platforms one and five.
Officials seized the gunny bags, containing 1,000kg PDS rice. “Unidentified people were planning to smuggle the rice to Kerala to be sold there at a high price. On seeing us, they escaped from the spot. No one has claimed ownership of the gunny bags with ration rice,” an official, who didn’t want to be named, said.
According to civil supply officials, the district has 1,421 ration shops and 9.99 lakh ration card holders.
The officials, including civil supplies CID police, had conducted 511 raids from January to July this year and seized 1,10,152kg PDS rice. As many as 68 cylinders and 115 vehicles were also seized from various people, while 327 people were arrested.
