LUCKNOW: Ignoring the ‘no parking’, ‘no vehicle’ and ‘drop and leave’ zone signage at Charbagh railway station, drivers coming to pick and drop VIPs park their vehicles haphazardly for long during arrival and departure of Lucknow mail and New Delhi AC Express causing inconvenience to common passengers.

During a reality check, TOI found many cars including those with ‘Bharat Sarkar,’ ‘Uttar Pradesh Shasan,’ ‘Uttar Pradesh Sarkar’ and ‘Police’ written on them parked in no parking zone, drop and leave zone and no vehicle zone.

Parking rules have been made for the convenience of all but VIP culture has rendered them useless, causing undue harassment to commoners. GRP personnel don’t enforce rules as they fear backlash from the high and mighty. State government and senior officials should take note of the fact and devise a mechanism to penalise offenders. Use of Technology like automatic number plate recognition system for issuance of challan can resolve the problem.

An SUV car bearing a political party’s flag was parked in drop and leave zone. When the driver was asked why he had parked vehicle in drop and leave zone, he replied rudely “ Jao apna kaam karo, ye gaadi yahi khadi hoti hai, ye mantri ji ki gaadi hai.”

Another SUV was parked right next to the porch. The driver rolled up the window on being questioned. His colleague said, “Aap jaiye, ye gaadi saheb ko lene aayi hai.”

A white SUV with ‘UP sarkar’ written on it was parked in the middle of the road. When asked to remove the car, the driver said: “Ye toh saheb ke aane ke baad hi hategi.”

GRP officials were issuing challans to bike owners for wrong parking but had turned a blind eye towards VIP vehicles. When questioned, GRP personnel said “Hamein naukri karni hai. Aap hamein naukri karne dijiye.”

SP GRP Saumitra Yadav said, “I have asked inspector Charbagh to issue challan to anyone who violates parking norms. I will keep a tab.”
