The accused were identified as Manas Naag (28) and Phool Chand (22), who belonged to Jharkhand. Sub-inspector Inderjit Singh, SHO, GRP police station, said, “Two police parties arrested the accused from different platforms during the drive ahead of Independence Day. While Manas was arrested with 2kg opium, Chand was nabbed with 1.5kg of the contraband. They purchased opium from Jharkhand and then sold it in different areas.”
Police arrested them when they were on their way to give the consignment to a customer in Jalandhar, added the SHO. During investigation, police came to know that Manas had worked as a security guard at a restaurant in Jalandhar for two months, and at that time, he came in contact with some men involved in smuggling of banned substances. Thereafter, he started selling drugs in Jalandhar,” he said.
A case under Sections 18, 61, 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused.
In another case, the GRP arrested 35-year-old Kanhiya Lal with 11 bottles of illicit liquor. A case under Section 61-1-14 of the Excise Act was registered against the accused.
