“The PWD and police have been asking for a level crossing near Majerhat. We have made it very clear that it won’t be possible there for technical reasons. There is a proposal for another level crossing between Majerhat and New Alipore. We have explained that everybody will face problem if that is done. Even if we receive clearance from the railway Board, there would be severe disruption in services when the work is on. This will continue even after the level crossing is operational as it would be very difficult to stop the non-ending flow of road traffic,” a senior Eastern railway (ER) official stated.
According to a different official, over 50 pairs of trains cross the spot the place this level crossing has been proposed. Even if the gates are to stay closed for six minutes throughout the passage of every prepare, highway site visitors must be held up for 600 minutes or 10 hours on daily basis. This is more likely to trigger extreme chaos on the highway resulting in the level crossing.
“Ultimately, people will lose their cool and start harassing the attendants at the level crossing gates. Who would be held responsible if these people are manhandled by mobs for refusing to open the gates even when trains are approaching,” he stated.
The state has sought a response from Eastern railway (ER) and one is more likely to be despatched on Monday, officers stated. However, it’s unlikely to have any dedication on level crossings. This can solely occur after the railway Board offers a go forward.
“In 2013, the railway minister had clearly stated in Parliament that all level crossings will be replaced by road overbridges or railway under-bridges and no new ones would be allowed. We can’t go against this commitment. We will await an order from the railway Board,” stated one other official.
railway engineers, in the meantime, are not prepared to purchase the speculation that the bridge must be demolished instantly. According to one of many them, the state may even go in for a flyover just like the the Maa Flyover throughout the ROB at Park Circus. The flyover can move above the ROB at Majerhat. Till this flyover is prepared, site visitors can transfer alongside the restored Majerhat Bridge,” he stated.
