KOLKATA: Who will bear the fee of the new Majerhat bridge proposed by the West Bengal authorities? As the state prepares to write down to the ministry of railways over sharing of the costs, senior officers of the Eastern railway in Kolkata stated on Saturday that the query of price sharing doesn’t come up resulting from a number of causes. However, it’s for the ministry to take the ultimate determination.

“Costs are shared between the state and the railways when a road overbridge (ROB) or railway underbridge (RUB) is being built to replace a level crossing. Usually funds are then sanctioned on a 51:49 cost-sharing basis, with the railways bearing 51% of the expenditure,” a senior ER official stated.

“In this case, a bridge is being replaced when the portion over the railway tracks hasn’t suffered any damage and train services are not affected. Moreover, the railways has nothing to do with the damage to the portion that collapsed. Under such circumstances, the railway Board is unlikely to clear any fund. However, this will be the ministry’s decision,” he added.

“If it can’t be established that lack of maintenance by the railways had something to do with the collapse, the cost of the new bridge is unlikely to be shared,” a state authorities official stated. Though chief minister Mamata Banerjee stated on Friday that development work for the Joka-BBD Bag Metro stretch might have prompted some harm to the construction, the railways doesn’t agree. Both RVNL, the implementing company of the metro mission, and Rites Ltd have dominated out such a risk.

Level crossings are changed with ROBs when their site visitors densities cross 1 lakh TVUs (train Vehicle Unit).
